The new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library combines the resources of the San Jose Public Library and the San Jose State University Library.

The Challenge

A team of 40 librarians needed to complete 82 projects in seven major program areas before the grand opening of the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California. None of the librarians was an experienced project planner.

The Solution

"Project KickStart was incredibly useful and easy to use from the day it was introduced", said Sharon Russell, Program Manager at the Library.

Each of the 40 librarians on the team got a copy of Project KickStart. The team identified 82 projects in seven major programs areas that needed to be done by the opening day in the fall of 2003. Small subteams used Project KickStart to plan and manage those projects successfully. And the teams are still using Project KickStart plans to stay focused on the ongoing tasks for each of these major programs.

The Benefits

  • Easy enough for non-professional planners to learn and use quickly.
  • Team-centered approach.
  • Inexpensive, and offers educational and non-profit discounts, including to librarians.
