Do I have to uninstall PKS4 before installing Project KickStart 5?

Yes. Uninstall Project KickStart 4 before installing Project KickStart Pro 5. Don't worry, you won't lose any of your projects.

When does my Free Trial begin?

What should I do if the Free Trial file does not install Project KickStart?

If your Internet connection is interrupted during the download, the file you download may not be the right size. When you try to install it, you may get an error message from Windows. You can check whether your download completed correctly as follows:

  1. Using Windows Explorer or "My Computer", find the file that you just downloaded:
    PKS5Setup.exe
  2. Right-click on the PKS5Setup.exe file and select "Properties"
  3. Check the file size: it should be 19477808 bytes.

Does the Free Trial have limitations?

Yes, the free trial has the following limitations:

  • You can only print one page of the Gantt chart during the trial.

  • There are water marks in the Task List Report during the trial.

  • The free trial lasts 20 days.

Will the projects I work on during the Free Trial be saved?

Yes. You can create and save projects during the trial. Your work will be saved on your computer when you later purchase Project KickStart.

Installation

How can I install Project KickStart on a network?

  • Once you have licenses for each person who will be using Project KickStart on the network, you can install it on the network.
  • You must install Project KickStart on each work station. When you are asked where to install the files, specify a folder on the network drive. (Some files will also be copied to the \Windows\System folder on the work station. Also, there will be registry entries on the work station, noting the location of important files and program parameters.)
  • Then, when each user runs Project KickStart from their work station, they will be able to open up prx files and will have access to shared Libraries.
  • If you are installing a Project KickStart Trial on a networked computer, you may need to have administrative privileges to do so.

Can I use Project KickStart on two computers?

  • Our policy is that you can activate Project KickStart on two computers that you personally use at different times/places.
  • The license does not allow you to install it on other people's computers for them to use. You need to purchase additional licenses for additional users.
  • If due to computer problems, hard disk crashes, etc., you need additional activations, email us using our contact form (www.projectkickstart.com/support/email_support.cfm) and we will take care of you.

How can I uninstall Project KickStart?

Have your administrator (only) perform the following:

  • Uninstall Project KickStart through Window's Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

Errors on Installation

If you see an error on installing like: Error 1608: Unable to create Install Driver instance:

  • This is an InstallShield Error. Please go to the InstallShield errors page on the InstallShield Consumer Help page. If you do not see the error you recieved under Common Errors, Click on View All Errors.

What should I do if installing Project KickStart causes another program to start:

This is a bug in the Microsoft installer that is described in a Knowledgebase article. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265194

  • When you follow the link from the Microsoft Knowledgebase, it brings you to a page That allows you to download the Office 2000 Resource Kit. That is fine if you have Office 2000.
  • If you have a different version of Office, you need to click the Version on the left, and then download the Resource Kit. When you do this, the Resource Kit will be delivered in a download called Orktools.exe

General Questions & Troubleshooting

How can I find a Project KickStart 4 prx file I previously worked on?

As of November 20, 2007, to accommodate the security needs of Vista, the default location for saving prx files changed to:
My Documents\Project KickStart Projects\PKSProjects\

  • If you can't find project files you worked on before, they may be in the former default file location.
  • Browse to the former location and see if they are there.
    c:\program files\project kickstart 4\PKSProjects\
  • If that does not work, use Windows search utility to search for files of type *.prx

How can I create a PDF file?

  1. To print your file as a PDF, you need to have a PDF printer installed. Project KickStart does not have a PDF printer driver inside. We have a bug now with the Adobe PDF printer. One of our customers recommends a free one called 'Cute PDF.' We have used PDF XChange from www.docu-track.com. You can download it from the publisher, and purchase it for around $30.
  2. In the 'File' menu, choose 'Print Gantt Chart Report....' Click on 'Preview' and then 'Page Setup' to choose your printer. Select the PDF printer.
  3. If in printing the Gantt chart on a PDF printer, you get a small image on the first page, change the dpi from 600 to 300 (draft mode) and scale the printing to graphics setting to 50%. You can make these changes in the Printer Properties dialog.

How can I send automated technical support log to tech support?

Project KickStart logs errors that it detects and lets you send them to Tech Support. Here is how it works:

  • In Project KickStart's Help menu see if there is a row under Technical Support to: "Send Technical Support Log" - See image below
  • Send to support
  • If so, click it, fill-in your email address, and send it to us.

What if my Screen looks blank inside of Project KickStart?

If you can't where to type in the name, phases, or other steps, you may have too large of a font size. To check your font settings:

  • In Windows 7, Right-click on your desktop. Choose Personalize. Click on Display. Project KickStart 5 requires a screen resolution of Smaller 100% (default) or Medium 125%. If your screen resolution is Larger 150%, please change the screen resolution to one of the supported settings.
  • In Vista: Right-click on your desktop. Choose Personalize. Click on Adjust Font size. Project KickStart 5 requires either the default of 96 DPI or the larger scale of 120 DPI.
  • In other Windows systems: Right click on your desktop. Choose Properties. Click on the Settings tab. Click on the Advanced button. Project KickStart 5 requires either Small Fonts or Large Font

I am setting up my new computer and want to download the KickStart 5 upgrade I purchased earlier this year. How do I do that?

Download the Free Trial from our web site: www.projectkickstart.comdownloads/download_now.cfm. Install it on your new computer. When you launch Project KickStart 5, it will ask you if you want to ‘Buy' or ‘Activate'. Choose ‘Activate' and enter your license key.

Activation Problems

How can I activate Project KickStart Standard to Pro

  1. Download the latest version and install it.
  2. If you program comes up with a splash screen which says Project KickStart Standard, then open a project, go to Help/ Activate Pro and put in your Pro License Key there.
  3. If you need additional activations, email_support.

What should I do if I get an invalid license key error?

What should I do if I am unable to activate Project KickStart version 5?

  1. Please make sure that you have the latest version of our software. You can check in the 'Help' menu in 'About Project KickStart' for the date of Jan 01, 2012. If not, please download and install PKS again. Here's the link:
    www.projectkickstart.comdownloads/new_version.cfm
  2. The most common problem with activations is that the user does not have sufficient privileges to get to our website and/or to get the activation back from our website.
Therefore, we also suggest that you select 'run as administrator' when you run the installation. This will give the installation the authority it needs to write files in various locations on your computer. Find the download file, and right mouse click, and select Run As Administrator.
  3. While you are activating Project KickStart, please stop all virus software, since they can sometimes stop outbound and inbound internet traffic like our activation.
  4. Also, very important, 'run as administrator' when you activate Project KickStart. Right mouse click the Project KickStart program icon, and select "Run As Administrator."
  5. Add www.projectkickstart.com to allowed sites in your Internet browser.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please check in Project KickStart for a menu next to the 'Help' menu called 'Send Technical Support Log.' If it's there, please click on it, enter your email address, and send it in. This will help us to troubleshoot your case.

What should I do if I am unable to activate Project KickStart version 4?

  1. Please make sure that you have the latest build of PKS 4. You can check in the 'Help' menu in 'About Project KickStart' for the date of May 23, 2008. If not, please download and install PKS again. Here's the link:
    www.projectkickstart.com/support/download_PKS_PRO_4.cfm
  2. The most common problem with activations is that the user does not have sufficient privileges to get to our website and/or to get the activation back from our website. Therefore, we also suggest that you select 'run as administrator' when you run the installation. This will give the installation the authority it needs to write files in various locations on your computer.
  3. While you are activating Project KickStart, please stop all anti-virus software, since they can sometimes stop outbound and inbound internet traffic like our activation. Also select 'run as administrator' when you run Project KickStart at the time you want to activate it.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please check in Project KickStart for a menu next to the 'Help' menu called 'Send Technical Support Log.' If it's there, please click on it, enter your email address, and send it in. This will help us to troubleshoot your case.

How can I import contacts from Outlook Exchange Server?

First, you need to export .pst file data from Outlook Exchange Server using the following steps to export an individual folder:

  1. On Outlook Exchange's File menu, click Import and Export. (If the menu item is not available, hover the pointer over the chevronschevrons at the bottom of the menu and then click Import and Export.)
  2. Click Export To File and click Next.
  3. Click Personal Folder File (.pst) and click Next.
  4. Click the folder that you want to export the .pst file to, and click Next.
  5. Click the Browse button and then select the location to save the .pst file.
  6. In the File Name box, type a descriptive file name for the .pst file, and then click OK.
  7. Click Finish
Second, you need to copy contact names kept in a Personal Folders file (.pst) into your Outlook Contacts folder. Open the .pst in Outlook and then drag names from its folder into the Contacts folder.
  1. On the File menu, point to Open, and then click Outlook Data File.
  2. Locate your .pst file, click it, and then click OK to open it.
  3. On the Go menu, click Folder List.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the Folder List to locate your .pst folder, for example, MyChoralContacts. You may need to click the plus sign next to the folder to reveal its contents.
  5. Click the contact you want to include in an address book, and then while holding down the CTRL key, click and drag the contact into the Contacts folder. By following this process, you copy the contact instead of moving it.
  6. When you are finished copying contacts, right-click the MyChoralContacts folder, and then click Close "MyChoralContacts".
  7. Click the Contacts folder, and then locate the contacts you copied to it.

Note: we have encountered implementations of Microsoft Exchange Server where Project KickStart cannot locate the proper folder and files in order to import the contacts and export the tasks. We will work with you to understand your implementation in an attempt to get Project KickStart to work, but we do have limited resources to do so.

If, for some reason, you need to determine the version of Microsoft Exchange Server you are using, here is a useful link.

Networking

Are multiple users protected when they access the same project on a network drive?

  • If more than one user opens the same project file on the server, the first user will have read and write privileges, and other users only have read privileges.
  • When they want to save, they will find they cannot save "over" an open copy. They can "Save As" under a different name.

Vista Compatibility

If you come across a dialogue box in Vista that says "Project KickStart has stopped working," you can get PKS to work in two ways, one temporary and one permanent.

The temporary solution: Run PKS with administrator privileges. You can do this by right clicking the program icon, and selecting Run As Administrator. It should load normally.

The permanent solution: Change the security settings of Vista by disabling the User Account Control (UAC). To do so,

  1. Go to the Control Panel and select 'User Accounts'.
  2. Click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off'.
  3. Click 'OK' to turn it off.
  4. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

You can re-enable UAC later by turning it back on.

Windows 7 Compatibility

What should I do if I get a runtime error 217 when starting Project KickStart in Windows 7:

  1. Right mouse click the Project KickStart desktop icon.
  2. Select trouble shoot compatibility.
  3. Follow the instructions on solving the issues and save the settings as directed. (XP Service Pack 2)
  4. Now Project KickStart should start normally.

A recent change in Project KickStart Pro 5 set up is that projects are saved by default in the "Documents" folder.  Also Project KickStart's configuration and utility files are no longer saved in program files folder. Rather, they are saved in the "Documents" folder. We did this mainly to accommodate the security settings of Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

What if I get a Run time error 91 Object variable or with block variable not set?

If you are on Vista, please run as Administrator when you launch Project KickStart. Right-click on the Project KickStart icon and select 'Run as Administrator'.

The following normally fixes the "Run Time Error 91" issue. The solution involves uninstalling and reinstalling Project KickStart (PKS).

  1. Uninstall Project KickStart using Windows Add/Remove Programs Utility in Control Panel. Your project files, templates, etc., will not be deleted during this process.
  2. Download the latest build of PKS to your Desktop (or other location) by using this link: www.projectkickstart.comdownloads/new_version.cfm.
  3. Save the file called PKS5Setup.exe to your Desktop on your computer.
  4. Double click on the PKS5Setup.exe file you downloaded to your Desktop (or other location) to reinstall Project KickStart.
  5. Launch Project KickStart and the "Run Time Error 91" should not occur.

If the problem continues to occur, please submit a technical support case.

Version 3 and Prior Versions

How can I open a Project KickStart 3 prj file in Project KickStart 5?

  1. Click the Open Project button on the toolbar, or click File on the menu bar, and then click Open Project.
  2. In the Open Project File dialog box, click the Files of type list arrow, and then click *.prj file type.
  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the prj file. Generally, prj files are stored in: c:\program files\Project KickStart 3

How-to convert prj files to PKS 5

  • In order to read prj files in PKS 5, you need to have PKS 3 installed on your system. PKS 3 does not run on Windows Vista or Windows 7. You must convert PKS3 prj files to PKS5 on a computer that is not running Windows Vista. After the prj files are converted you can send the prx files to your computer running Windows Vista or Windows 7.
  • On a computer with Windows XP, start PKS5. Select 'Open a Project' and select file type 'Project KickStart 3' from the drop-down list. Save your project as a prx file.
  • For alternate solutions for Windows XP and for the Windows Vista and Windows 7 workaround, please submit a technical support case.

Registered users of Project KickStart can upgrade to Version 5.

  2. Install Version 5 on your computer, using the defaults on where it installs. (Do not install it "over" Project KickStart 3.)
  3. You do need to have Ver. 3 on your computer to open and convert Ver. 3 files to Ver. 5 files.

Lost CD for Version 3

You can order a PKS 3.2 replacement download for $50. It's an unlocked version. Here's a link to the order form:

System Requirements

What are the System Requirements for Project KickStart?

  • Windows Me / NT / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10
  • 128 MB RAM, 25 MB free disk space

Mac OS

Currently, Project KickStart is not supported by the Mac operating system, meaning that it will only run natively on Windows computers. In order to run Project Kickstart on Apple computers, you will need to use either (1) Apple's Boot Camp or (2) a 3rd Party Virtualization Software. In order to use either of these options you will need an Apple computer with an Intel processor. To see whether you have an Intel processor, click on the Apple menu and the sub-menu "About This Mac." If you see the word "Intel" anywhere in the Processor information, then you will be able to run Windows.

(1) Apple's Boot Camp is software that allows you to, essentially, turn your Mac into a Windows computer. In order to use Boot Camp, you will need a copy of Microsoft Windows. In order to use Boot Camp, you can open the Boot Camp Assistant, located in the Utilities folder. Boot Camp Assistant will help you create a separate partition on your hard drive where you will be able to install Windows. After you have installed Windows, you will be able to access it by booting up the Windows partition of your hard drive (you can do this by restarting and holding down the option-key while your computer starts up). Once you are in Windows, you can install Project KickStart by following our Windows instructions for installation.

While Boot Camp is powerful software in that it allows you to run Windows, it also has drawbacks. The most important one of these is that you will not have access to both your Windows partition and your Mac OS partition at the same time, meaning that you will not be able to run Mac OS programs or, depending on your settings, access any data on the other partition. If you need to run Mac OS X at the same time as you run ProjectKickstart, then you may want to consider our second option.

(2) There are several 3rd party software companies that develop software allowing you to run Windows on your Mac at the same time as you run Mac OS X. Three leading examples of Windows virtualization software include Virtual Box (http://www.virtualbox.org/), which is a free program, VMware Fusion (www.vmware.com), and Parallels (www.parallels.com). Having a copy of Microsoft Windows is required for running these programs, and further instructions are available on their respective websites.
